I had been to Venice once before, as part of a drunken, decadent and debauched interrailing trip with my best friend at the height of summer. Our Venice was spent wandering around the tiny deserted streets at 2am trying to find the hostel after we'd missed our train and arrived hours later than expected, sitting on the ground in the middle of Piazza San Marco smoking shoddily made rollies, drinking too many tequilas on the beach at Lido, eating the best pizza I've ever had (to this day!) and trying to ignore our hostel proprietor's insanely long coke nail.

Needless to say, a romantic trip to Venice two years later was dramatically different. The sheer beauty of Venice wasn't lost on me the first time around, but seeing it without the mild permanent hangover haze and tired, frazzled edges you acquire after weeks of travelling definitely made a difference.

The beauty and magic of Venice hangs heavy in the air, so much so that it's hard to believe you're in a real, living, working, breathing city and not a film set. With the turn of every corner you're confronted with some kind of beautiful architecture, whether that be a grand Gothic church or a romantically dilapidated apartment building, with cast iron balconies and gorgeous green shutters. In terms of comparison and competition, Paris is the only other city that comes close in my experience, but its beauty and majesty is beaten hands down by the canals and waterways of Venice, the beautiful, ornate bridges, the gondolas, the vaparettos, the somehow more palpable sense of history and the fact that every single restaurant seems to offer a caraffe of wine for around the €10 mark. Plus, the compactness of Venice and the complete lack of cars and roads lend it a certain feeling of detachment from reality; in fact it almost feels like a place neglected by time, which to the visitor, makes it a true escape.

And, it's no secret Italian red wine is my favourite.
